~Sprinkle the little sugar over the top ~
The price of grain is up again
I wonder how many can share so few
We’ll have to cut the meat to bits
And weigh the rice filled half with sand
The kids will have to share a plate
Their eyes dry, belly swollen
Soak the gari until it swells
Sprinkle the little sugar over the top
Mother will give father the best that we have
Maybe today we can eat rice and butter?
Beans and oil?
Palm oil, salt and any leftovers
The rams look dry
The cow even worse
The goats are still spritely
The pigs are haram
When will it rain?
Father says the rain will come
Mother fears the rain coming now
The land needs moisture to soften the ground
The ground needs drought to stop it from drowning
The lucky few have eaten today
Some blessed less have some for tomorrow
Children dance, children play, children cry
Children sleep, children wake
And some children die
I wonder how many can share so few
We’ll have to cut the meat to bits
And weigh the rice filled half with sand
The kids will have to share a plate
Their eyes dry, belly swollen
Soak the gari until it swells
Sprinkle the little sugar over the top
Mother will give father the best that we have
Maybe today we can eat rice and butter?
